Week 4 – from Monday 19 August

Looking to the north transept – the left hand arm of the building.

Here is the font. You would usually encounter the font near the entrance to the church because baptism is the first event in a Christian’s life.  The font now in use at St George’s has been moved from near the main door to the north transept. This means that families have more room to gather round the font when a baptism is taking place. The font has eight sides each with a significant motif: Christ blessing the children; the Crown of Thorns; Noah’s Ark, Α [Alpha – the first letter of the Greek alphabet] and Ω[Omega – the last letter of the Greek alphabet]; the Crucifixion; HIS [the first three letter in Greek of  Jesus’ name]; the Dove; ΧΡ [the first two letters in Greek of Christ].

Beside the font is the Paschal [Easter] candle designed by Thomas Freeth. This candle is lit on the Eve of Easter Day, Holy Saturday, and represents the Light of Christ. At baptisms the newly baptized person receives a candle lit from the Paschal Candle.

In this area are also some boards giving information about the choir and another with material
about events in the church calendar.
