Go Green(er) for Lent – Week 2: 16 March
Go Green(er) for Lent
Introduction
As members of Eco Church St George’s has made a commitment to long term action on the environment. How can we become better at caring for creation and improving our lives and the lives of others through healthy, eco-friendly and sustainable living?
At present St George’s is working to implement good standards in sustainability where we are able.
The Lenten 40-day period before Easter gives us the opportunity to reflect on the practice of fasting and commit to giving up something that brings a real benefit to nature and helps address climate change. Each week in Lent some suggestions will be offered: you could help the environment. Take time to pray, reflect and consider these options. Perhaps you could choose just one or two to start with and add something new each week.
Lord God, give us the wisdom to care for our planet and for each other.
Help us to think, pray and act now for the good of future generations and all creation.
Week 2: 16 March
Boycott fast fashion. Reduce your impact on nature as you buy less or buy pre loved.
There are so many charity shops in our area. You will also be supporting worthy causes.
Buy local or in bulk. Learn more about our food system and the positive impact
that shopping locally can have.
Become zero waste. Slowly try to reduce your waste a bit every week. Consider giving a home-made gift instead of buying a present. You could do this at St George’s Craft and Chat Group which meets on Monday mornings at 11.30am in church. Think about looking at your food shopping and seeing what items you could buy differently, spending a bit more on loose fruit and veg for example. Bring used stamps to church for the RNIB collection.
Lord God, giver of food sufficient for the day.
We thank you for the resources of the world,
and for the many good things you have provided for us.
May we use them with restraint and understanding
Grant us wisdom and self control
in our spending and consumption.
