Go Green(er) for Lent

Go Green(er) for Lent

Introduction

As members of Eco Church St George’s has made a commitment to long term action on the environment. How can we become better at caring for creation and improving our lives and the lives of others through healthy, eco-friendly and sustainable living?

At present St George’s has a Gold status for Worship and Teaching; Bronze for Buildings; Silver for Land; Silver for Community and Global Engagement; Bronze for Lifestyle.

The Lenten 40-day period before Easter gives us the opportunity to reflect on the practice of fasting and commit to giving up something that brings a real benefit to nature and helps address climate change. Each week in Lent some suggestions will be offered: you could help the environment. Take time to pray, reflect and consider these options. Perhaps you could choose just one or two to start with and add something new each week.

Lord God, give us the wisdom to care for our planet and for each other.
Help us to think, pray and act now for the good of future generations and all creation.

Week 4: 27 March

Grow your own. Whether you have a garden or sunny windowsill, find out what you can sow and grow on a month-to-month basis.

Change your method of transport. How about walking or cycling for repeated errands, choosing one day a week to walk, cycle or take public transport to work where you are able to. Car share with a friend or relative (Covid permitting).

Switch to green energy. This is not advisable at the moment. When the “energy crisis” settles down consider suppliers, compare the supplier charging rates as well as what each company means by ‘green energy’. Try to minimise energy use by switching off unessential appliances but do not take unnecessary risks

Heavenly Father
inspire us to make mature lifestyle choices that are unselfish and sustainable.
May we always try to encourage the care and protection of ecosystems.
