A message from St George parish church

Remembering

Introduction

Over the next few weeks as we go through the autumn a poem will be included with the weekly readings.
Some of the poems will be familiar and others may be new to you.
They will reflect thoughts and ideas associated with this time of year.

Through the Season of Remembering we acknowledge that we and our communities have been affected by loss,
illness and death.

We recognise those who have influenced our lives for good and we give thanks for God’s steadfast love.

The Soldier’s Death     Anne, Countess of Winchelsea     1661 – 1720

Trail all your pikes, dispirit every drum,
March in a slow procession from afar,
Ye silent, ye dejectd men of war!
Be still the hautboys, and the flute be dumb!
Display no more, in vain, the lofty banner.
For see! where on the bier before ye lies
The pale, the fall’n, th’untimely sacrifice
To your mistaken shrine, to your false idol Honour.
