Sunday 6 November 2022 – A Reflection

Reflection for the Third Sunday before Advent  – Year C

From the third part of George Frideric Handel’s oratorio Messiah, the aria is well known to many of us. Perhaps we sang this popular oratorio at school or in a choral group.

The scriptural text of the oratorio was compiled by Charles Jennens using the King James Bible.

The affirmation of the first section of this aria comes from this week’s Old Testament reading and it is ratified by the declaration in the second sentence from 1Cor 15. 20. The whole forms an expression of faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

I know that my redeemer liveth
And that he shall stand
At the latter day, upon the earth
And though worms destroy this body
Yet in my flesh shall I see God.

For now is Christ risen from the dead
The first fruits of them that sleep
Of them that sleep.
