Harvest Reflection
For the fruits of his creation, thanks be to God.
Written by the Methodist minister, Fred Pratt Green (1903 – 2000), this hymn combines our gratitude to God for the richness of the earth with our responsibility to care for creation and all humankind. We are to share our harvest and give thanks for the love of God supporting life, growth and hope.
For the fruits of his creation,
thanks be to God.
For his gifts to every nation,
thanks be to God.
For the ploughing, sowing, reaping,
silent growth while we are sleeping,
future needs in earth’s safekeeping,
thanks be to God.
We praise you, Our God, for all the good things of life: a plenteous supply of food in the shops and the harvest from our gardens and allotments. You are the one who creates and sustains the universe.
In the just reward of labour,
God’s will be done.
In the help we give our neighbour,
God’s will be done.
In our worldwide task of caring
for the hungry and despairing,
in the harvests we are sharing,
God’s will be done.
From the beginning you, our God, gave humankind work to do, cooperating with you to look after creation; acting with you to ensure that all have enough to eat. Help us to avoid the misuse and exploitation of your gifts. May we be careful, thankful and generous.
For the harvests of the Spirit,
thanks be to God.
For the good we all inherit,
thanks be to God.
For the wonders that astound us,
for the truths that still confound us,
most of all that love has found us,
thanks be to God.
You, O God, sent your Holy Spirit to strengthen us for your work. Make us eager to share your gifts for the flourishing of your people so that all creation can remain as you created it – very good.
We give you thanks that despite our mistakes and shortcomings you continue to love us and we trust that you will gather us into your barn at the final harvest.
