Go Green(er) for Lent
Go Green(er) for Lent
Introduction
As members of Eco Church St George’s has made a commitment to long term action on the environment. How can we become better at caring for creation and improving our lives and the lives of others through healthy, eco-friendly and sustainable living?
At present St George’s has a Gold status for Worship and Teaching; Bronze for Buildings; Silver for Land; Silver for Community and Global Engagement; Bronze for Lifestyle.
The Lenten 40-day period before Easter gives us the opportunity to reflect on the practice of fasting and commit to giving up something that brings a real benefit to nature and helps address climate change. Each week in Lent some suggestions will be offered: you could help the environment. Take time to pray, reflect and consider these options. Perhaps you could choose just one or two to start with and add something new each week.
Lord God, give us the wisdom to care for our planet and for each other.
Help us to think, pray and act now for the good of future generations and all creation.
Week 3: 20 March
Spend more time in nature. Connect with God as Creator and celebrate his creation in different ways over the Lenten period. Pray for the areas of the world that experience extremes of weather and physical disasters which have an adverse effect on creation.
Invite wildlife into your garden. Green your garden for nature’s benefit. If you do not have a garden perhaps you could set up a window box or bird feeder. Join the St George’s Friends of the Churchyard group.
Try a plant-based recipe or diet. Start by cooking yourself vegan or plant-based meals once a week and take it from there. As time goes on, cook more vegan/vegetarian meals and try to eliminate as many animal products from your diet as you can. Explore tasty recipes with Meat Free Monday.
Thank you, God for each amazing day:
the green of trees,
the blue of sky,
the freshness of rain,
the glow of the sun,
the shade of the clouds,
the cool of the wind on our faces.
