A message from St George parish church

Journey through January week 2

There are many points in the year when a fresh start can be made: the new school year, the tax year, Advent. The turn from December to January and our counting of the years of the Common Era is another opportunity to take stock and assess our lives: our needs, aspirations and hopes. We can also reflect on the needs of others and of the whole creation.

It is during this change as we move into January that the hymn Lord, for the years, can be appropriate and helpful. Using the five verses we can consider aspects of our life and of creation at the beginning of New Year, 2022.

The week beginning Sunday 9 Jan 2022

*Lord, for our world where we disown and doubt you,
Loveless in strength and comfortless in pain,
Hungry and helpless, lost indeed without you:
Lord of the world, we pray that Christ will reign.

Lord, on many occasions we have forgotten
your people in need around the world;
we have been more concerned with our own interests
than with your purpose for your creation.
Help us to do better in the coming year.

Sunday 9 January is kept as The Baptism of Christ [Luke 3:15-22]
At this time we have the opportunity to remember our baptism.

Heavenly Father at the Jordan you revealed Jesus as your Son: may we recognise him as our Lord and know ourselves to be your beloved children.

Lord of all time and eternity, you opened the heavens and revealed yourself as Father in the baptism of Jesus your beloved Son: by the power of your Spirit complete the heavenly work of our rebirth through the waters of the new creation.

In Baptism, Christians receive the grace of the Holy Spirit, who is our constant guide. The Holy Spirit helps us to live in relationship with God and others.

Heavenly Father, by the power of your Holy Spirit
you give to your faithful people new life in the water of baptism.
Guide and strengthen us by the same Spirit,
that we who are born again may serve you in faith and love.
May we daily be renewed by the anointing Spirit,
and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory.
